Unit 00 · What you already do with AI, and what you don’t yet

First session · 45 minutes · two groups, 10th and 11th grade.

What happens

The first session follows no script: it is a conversation to find out where the year starts from. Nobody generates anything yet. Each group answers one question, out loud, and the Learning Facilitator writes down what is said.

Question for 10th grade: what bothers you about AI?

What you don’t like, what worries you, what seems unfair or too easy. Everything counts, and none of it comes from the Learning Facilitator: the list belongs to the group.

Question for 11th grade: what do you use it for today?

How you really use it, no polish: for homework, to create, for anything. There are no right answers here either.

What is shown

So the question doesn’t stay abstract, the Learning Facilitator shows work of their own, made with generative artificial intelligence: music, video, games and apps. Not to be admired, but as proof that the second column exists, and that the person standing in front of you makes it. Each one opens right here, full size: explore it at your own pace.

No screens

Part of the session, at least ten minutes and before anything is shown, happens with no screens: no phone, no computer, no AI. You answer and discuss your group’s question, draw the two columns on paper and place what was said in them, and write or dictate one thing you’d like to exist: what the AI would do there, what you would do and what you would decide. That sheet comes back in Unit 01.

What stays open

The distinction the year hangs on was said in this session without being drawn yet:

What each group answers usually fits, almost whole, in the left-hand column. The rest of the year works on the right-hand one, and in Unit 01 each person proposes three possible projects for the year there.

What this is, and what it isn’t

This session was improvised, and it’s recorded that way. The program is a design position, authored by Carlos Miranda Levy, not a research finding; the two lists are what two specific groups said in one specific session, evidence of what they think, never of an effect. No account was created in anyone’s name, no piece was generated, and nothing that was said carries a name.
