Scenario 14 of 16

An image that is not yours

The situation

You are 15. A classmate adds you to a new group and, with no warning, someone sends an intimate photo of a girl from another class. The messages come in a chain: “hahaha”, “send it to the other group”, “who’s got more?”. You recognise the girl: she is quiet, she hardly talks to anyone. Someone types her full name and her Instagram handle “so people can ask her”. You did not ask to be there, you did not ask to see that, and now the image is on your phone, in a chat where twenty people are deciding in real time what to do with another person’s dignity. The group expects you to go along with it. What you do in the next few minutes matters more than it looks.

What would you do?

Facilitator’s notes

This is worth saying plainly and without terror: this is among the most serious things the law regulates in the digital world. Spreading intimate content without consent is a criminal offence, aggravated when the victim is a child or adolescent (Art. 192, Ley 74-25), and possessing or distributing sexual images of minors has its own severe criminal definition (Art. 180, Ley 74-25) — which is why option c, however well intentioned, is exactly what you do not do: “saving a back-up” is possession, and nobody has asked you to be an archive of anything; the evidence is handled by the authorities. Among students: an adolescent aged 13 to 17 answers before the specialised justice system, whose purpose is educational (Arts. 225 and 326, Ley 136-03 — the Code for the Protection of Children and Adolescents), and at school this is a very serious breach (Art. 23, Ordenanza 05-2023 — the MINERD school-coexistence rules) — “going along with it” has real consequences at any age. Option b is the complete one: break the chain, object, and tell an adult — the law protects anyone who reports in good faith (Art. 14, Ley 136-03), and telling is not “snitching”: it is the only thing that stops the girl being alone. Option a gets you out, but leaves her inside. Option d comes from empathy and can accompany b, although receiving that news without adult support is very hard: better that it reaches her with help already on the way. Question for the group: what harms the victim more — the first photo or the thousand forwarded ones — and what does that say about our power inside a group?
