Study and Practice Techniques — learning to learn
What this is. The catalog of techniques on the side of the person who is learning: self-directed, transferable methods that the Learning Subject (Sujeto de Aprendizaje) — the learner, the participant — can use on any content in order to learn, retain and build skill more effectively. It is the “learning to learn” layer. Smoother teaches these explicitly, and the Learning Facilitator (Orientador de Aprendizaje) and AI accompany them as coaching.

One and the same technique usually exists in two forms: as a designed activity inside a Learning Unit (Unidad de Aprendizaje), and as a self-directed method that the person carries from one piece of content to another. Both are valid and reinforce each other; this catalog governs the second and connects each technique with its principle and with its equivalent activity.
Position. The techniques are offered as a menu the person learns to handle, not as a rigid prescription. Effectiveness comes from the method — retrieval, spacing, explanation, practice at the edge — not from personal preference.
The techniques, by purpose
Each entry states what it is, which principle it operates, its evidence with an honest label, the method in steps, how it is integrated into Smoother, and its AI variant.
Retrieval and spaced review
Active retrieval. Reconstructing what has been learned from memory, without looking: not rereading, not recognizing. It is the most strongly supported principle in the catalog.
Flashcards. A prompt on the front and its answer on the back — question→answer, term→definition, fill in the blank, image→label. The method: look at the front, attempt to retrieve out loud or in writing, only then flip, self-grade, and let that grade feed the spaced review. It is not rereading: the card forces retrieval before the answer is seen. With AI: deck generation from the Learning Unit’s content, marked as generated and reviewable, and detection of ambiguous or duplicate cards.
Spaced review — the Leitner system. A planner: cards live in boxes; getting one right promotes it to the next box (it is reviewed less often), getting it wrong returns it to the first (it is reviewed more often), and each box has its interval. Only the cards due today are reviewed, and the review cuts across Learning Units and days, not a single session. It is the concrete engine of spaced practice, which until now existed only structurally.
Explanation and elaboration
The Feynman technique. Learning by explaining: explain a concept in simple terms, as if to someone with no experience; detect where you get stuck (the gaps); go back to the source to close them; simplify and add an analogy; repeat. It is the solo version of peer-teaching activities. With AI: the AI plays the probing novice — it listens to the explanation and asks exactly where the gaps are, without giving the answer.
Self-explanation and elaborative interrogation. Asking yourself “why is this so?” while studying, already present in the activity catalog.
Practice for skill and expertise
Purposeful and deliberate practice. The skill-building loop: specific sub-skill goal → attempt at the edge of capability → immediate, informative feedback → refine → repeat, building mental representations that make self-monitoring possible. It runs up the ladder skills → competencies → expert capacities. Two modes, both valid: purposeful practice is the floor — goal, focus, feedback, stepping out of the comfort zone — and applies in any domain; deliberate practice is the ceiling and adds expert decomposition of the skill, established methods and coaching, where the domain has objective measures of performance. Smoother reaches the deliberate mode by contributing (a) the decomposition and the structure from the methodology and (b) the immediate feedback from the Learning Facilitator or from AI. The method: define a concrete sub-skill — not “get better in general” —, practice a task that demands it just above the current level, ask for immediate feedback, identify the specific error, adjust and repeat. Do not repeat what is already mastered.
Worked examples and part-task practice are the antechamber: first the example, then independent practice at the edge.
AI as a coach for study and practice
The cross-cutting thread: AI turns techniques that require an expert or discipline into something accessible and sustained — it generates and schedules cards, probes the gaps in the Feynman explanation and, most importantly, provides the immediate feedback that turns purposeful practice into deliberate practice. With the safeguards of the AI document: AI supports judgment and acts as a coach; it does not substitute for judgment, nor does it hide that its feedback has limits where performance is subjective.
Evidence
Level: Mixed — an honest label per technique. The underlying principles are research-backed: retrieval, spacing, self-explanation, dual coding and feedback, all with meta-analyses. The named instruments and methods each carry their own label:
- Flashcards — a research-backed instrument (meta-analysis of test-enhanced practice; and evidence on cards combined with spacing).
- Spaced review / Leitner — an established algorithm on top of a spacing principle with strong evidence. The label distinguishes the algorithm from the principle.
- The Feynman technique — a popular method on top of self-explanation and learning-by-teaching, both supported. The name is a popularization, not a research construct, and this is said.
- Purposeful and deliberate practice — a strong construct, magnitude disputed, the strict form bounded to the domain. A meta-analysis shows a substantial but partial and domain-dependent contribution: necessary and not sufficient.
No technique is presented as more than what the evidence supports.
