Nano-learning

What this is. One of Smoother’s nineteen modalities: hyperfocused experiences, completable in a single session of fifteen to sixty minutes, centered on one concrete technique or tool whose application produces an observable artifact. The artifact is its exclusive signature.

The honesty frame, which is not negotiable

Nano-learning does not replace deep learning. It is a gateway: a quick win designed to bring the person into continuous learning processes that are motivated and connected to their real environment.

Smoother’s position stays intact: effective learning arises from sustained processes that are motivating, accompanied and applied. A nano session reaches, by design, as far as familiarizing someone with a technique, demonstrating its application and producing a first artifact. It does not reach as far as developing full competencies or expert capacities: that requires time, spaced practice, high-quality feedback and connection with the real environment — all of them impossible to cover in a single session.

The canonical disclaimer is rendered visibly in every nano:

This is a nano session: you learn a practical technique in 15-60 minutes. It does not replace deep learning — it opens it. To develop full competencies, this technique is an entry point into broader processes.

The frame is honored in three operational ways: the Learning Object (Objeto de Aprendizaje) explicitly marks competencies and expert capacities as “contributes toward” rather than full achievements; the next-steps section links mandatorily to a deepening program or path; and the disclaimer appears in the public glossary and on the program’s record.

Where it sits among neighboring modalities

Nano is the most atomic in scope — not the shortest in time — of the brief and focused group. Duration is indicative, never definitional; what defines it is the scope and the number of experiences:

The two discriminators, without depending on minutes. Nano versus micro: is something done (artifact → nano) or is something grasped (understanding → micro)? The artifact is the signature of nano. Micro versus short learning: one experience versus several. Nano and micro are each a single self-contained experience; several brief experiences do not make “a bigger micro” — they compose upward into a Learning Program, a Learning Path or a Specialization.

Who it is for

Four profiles: people in conditions of vulnerability — disaster survivors, displaced people, people living on the street, mobile populations — for whom the session fits inside a limited connectivity window and produces something immediately usable; people with scarce time or fragmented attention; professionals in a job transition who need specific skill jumps without pausing their work; and multidisciplinary teams where someone quickly needs a technique to solve one piece of the project.

What it must contain and how it is structured

Mandatory content, without exception: visual representations of the process (dual coding is mandatory) · numbered step-by-step instructions, with the expected result after each step · when the technique involves AI, specific prompts with replaceable placeholders, rendered for literal copying · editable templates · an interactive tool that generates a populated, downloadable artifact · and a real applied example, worked end to end.

Six sections, in this order: (1) Intro and premise — a hook sentence with a specific real pain point or case, what the technique is in one sentence, what you will have at the end, and the disclaimer. (2) The technique — text plus diagram, numbered steps with action, reason and expected result. (3) Worked example — on the same case as the hook, from beginning to end; it substitutes, at nano scale, for the Case Study and the Role Simulation of larger programs. (4) Interactive tool and downloadable template. (5) Retrieval and transfer — an active-recall question, a self-explanation prompt and a prompt for application to one’s own context. (6) Next steps and related — the disclaimer repeated, the mandatory deepening link and two to five related nanos.

The Learning Object is kept whole, with one prescriptive qualification. Competencies and expert capacities are written explicitly as “Contributes toward: …”, a mandatory convention in nano that applies to no other modality. Required prerequisites must be low or nil, to honor the accessibility of the modality.

The pedagogical foundations are adjusted to the scale. These stay mandatory: cognitive load management — which is the very reason nano exists —, dual coding, at least one worked example, at least one retrieval item, at least one self-explanation prompt, at least one transfer, and the full audit of the eight AI antipatterns. These do not fit the scale, and it is said: the general rule of three or more retrieval items, spaced practice inside the experience — it happens between nanos when they are composed into paths —, the pair of worked example plus faded example, and productive failure, which requires extended time.

When NOT to use nano

When the real goal is developing a full competency. When the technique intrinsically demands extended deliberate practice. When there is no tangible artifact at the end — if it does not produce something concrete, it is probably a talk. And when expert human feedback is needed: a nano can suggest it, not provide it.

Evidence

Level: Original — a specific Smoother contribution. The short format exists in the industry, but typically without a methodological frame that acknowledges its limits. Smoother’s original contribution is threefold: (a) the visible honesty frame for the participant — a gateway, not a substitute for deep learning —; (b) the special treatment of the Learning Object, which declares competencies and expert capacities as “contributes toward” rather than full achievements; and (c) the adapted pedagogical foundations, with reduced thresholds without diluting cognitive load management, dual coding, the worked example, retrieval, self-explanation, transfer or the AI antipattern audit.

Original does not mean less valuable; it means honestly labeled, and without direct experimental support.
