Worked example: the science of concón
Worked example: a science podcast that went from “explain the science of cooking” to a question everyone has asked at home.
Fill in the spaces and watch it change
Write the script for a 2-minute episode, for one voice, that answers an everyday science question: why does concón, the crispy rice layer, form at the bottom of the pot, and why does everyone love it?. Explain the science in three steps, with a comparison a 12-year-old would understand. Add comparing the concón made on low heat with the one made on medium heat that can be done safely at home. End with a question for the next episode. If any part of the explanation is uncertain, say so.
3 fields are missing: they will be copied with the examples. The examples are fine to start with, but your own details are what make the piece yours.
Where it is made: A text assistant for the script; for the recording, your own voice in the classroom or a generic synthetic voice from the catalog, the one your Learning Facilitator set up for the Unit.
- Attempt 1 in this example: “Explain the science of cooking to me.” Out came a general lecture about heat that nobody wanted to listen to.
- What changed in attempt 2: the team asked a question everyone has wondered about at home. The prompt barely changed; the question got better.
- Now you: find a question from your own home (why ice crackles in a soda, why clothes dry faster in a breeze) and check the explanation with your science Learning Facilitator.
- C1: the question hooks the listener from the first sentence.
- C2: the science is correct and has been checked.
And at the end: did the prompt get better, or did the question?
